Who is NowPlayingAustin.com?
NowPlayingAustin.com is a project of the Austin Creative Alliance, formerly Austin Circle of Theaters, a 35 year old nonprofit arts service organization for Austin and Central Texas. Our history as a ticketing and information center for the arts coupled with out many services designed to strengthen the arts community and bring new audiences to the arts has inspired our search for a comprehensive arts calendar information. We met the people behind the Artsopolis Marketing Partnership at our annual APASO conference (Assocation of Performing Arts Service Organizations) and knew immediately we had found something that could make all our arts organizations “perform” really well — and make them stars out there on the internet.
The development of this project is guided by our governing committee, our staff, and the greater Arts and Cultural community. Our initial sponsoring partners included the Wachovia Foundation, the Meadows Foundation, the Austin Community Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Austin Creative Alliance is itself funded in part by a grant from the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division and by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts and by an award from the National Endowment of the Arts which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
It’s simple. We want YOU to be able to experience firsthand the Arts and Creativity of Central Texas. We want you to get out and see a show, visit an exhibit, take your family or friends to a festival, take a class, subscribe to a blog, meet us at a happy hour, and basically have the opportunity to discover and participate in all the amazing things happening in our community! And if you’re a visitor, we hope you’ll find plenty of reasons to stay an extra day or two and see why Central Texas is such a great place to live.
By providing you with comprehensive information about what to do and where to go for unique cultural experiences, we hope to inspire greater participation in this broad range of events and activities. Austin is not just the capital of Texas and the Music Capital of the World. It’s a vibrant region of Arts, Culture, Technology and Community.
About the Austin Creative Alliance
For the last 35 years, Austin Circle of Theaters (ACoT) has provided visionary leadership, critical resources, vital services and great opportunities for growth to the artists, managers and patrons of the performing arts community of Central Texas. With the launch of this site, ACoT found itself increasingly servig the wider creative community. When forming a Creative Alliance emerged as the top recommendation of the CreateAustin Cultural plan, ACoT was the logical organization to lead that change. It changed its name in October 2009. Now, for the first time, Central Texas will have a support service and advocacy organization for our entire creative community. Building on ACoT’s 35 years of work to create greater public awareness, appreciation, and support for Austin’s performing arts community, the Austin Creative Alliance has expanded its services to embrace the full spectrum of our region’s expressive and creative activities across all disciplines and sectors—especially as it relates to strategy, action and engagement at all levels of civic life.
