GGG has survived the biggest challenge of all: COVID. “For over a year, our troupe only existed as a very involved group text thread full of hopes, sorrows, jokes, and memes. We found ways to get together on Zoom, in backyard karaoke parties, and using social media. Slowly, we restarted rehearsals and performances. We are more than an improv troupe, we are a sisterhood,” Said the last remaining original troupe member Shana Merlin. Since January 2022, GGG Improv has enjoyed a monthly residency at Fallout Theater on Second Fridays at 8pm. Fallout owner Mason Pitluck recently told GGG he’s “so happy and so honored y\’all will be calling Fallout home for the foreseeable future!!”
GGG has held many unofficial titles over the years: Austin’s Only All-Female Troupe when they began in 2002, Austin\’s Only Musical Improv Troupe when they added improvised singing and dancing to their shows, Founders of the First Comedy Festival in Austin Featuring Only Female-Identifying Comics and Performers with the conception of the Ladies Are Funny Festival in 2007, and jokingly, Austin’s Most Fertile Improv Troupe in 2019 when the arrival of Danny Finkelman brought the total number of children birthed by the eight troupe members to ten. Finally, Girls Girls Girls has spent 20 years as Austin’s Least Internet-Searchable Troupe—because when they named the group in 2002, Yahoo! was the top search engine and online porn was not yet a thing.
