Bach: Loser in Leipzig

Bach infamously came in third place in applying for the music director’s position in Leipzig in 1723. He only got the job after Telemann and Graupner refused it. La Follia performs the audition cantatas from all three composers.

Bach infamously came in third place in applying for the music director’s position in Leipzig in 1723,. He only got the job after Telemann and Graupner refused it. Were the Town Council idiots? Or did they make wise choices? We perform the audition cantatas from all three composers. Decide for yourself.

Jenny Houghton, Nick Garza, Steven Brennfleck, and Gil Zilkha are joined by a 15 piece Baroque ensemble. The concert includes a US premier of the Telemann cantata.
