Susan Scafati is an American conceptual artist who explores the ways in which individual versus collective identities, personal versus cultural mythologies, are constructed. She explores the iconography and materiality that contribute to the way meaning is organized and its impact on human experience. Scafati’s solo exhibition features in the 3rd and 4th Floor Balcony Windows a 2-story, site-responsive, mixed-media installation that reimagines our constructed landscape as a suspended spectrum of everyday urban forms in flux. This exhibition extends to the library’s 6th Floor Living Room where Scafati’s archival pigment and silver gelatin prints and sculptures are on view. These artworks explore existence and perception, inviting us to think about how representation of one’s self and one’s world is expressed in our visual, virtual culture today. This project is funded in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department, and sponsored by Big Medium.
Scafati’s artwork has been widely exhibited in museums and galleries. Career highlights include being featured in exhibitions “Unframed: First Look” by Cindy Sherman, Adam Fuss, and Jack Pierce (Sean Kelly Gallery, New York), “The Photo Review” juried by Museum of Modern Art/ MOMA Curator Sarah Meister (University of the Arts, Philadelphia), and as the Modern Voice Artist for “Goya: Mad Reason” curated by Douglas Cushing (Blanton Museum, Austin). Recent large-scale commissions include an 111-foot installation for the Texas Medal of Arts Awards (The Long Center for the Performing Arts, Austin) and a 4-story art installation as a Facebook Artist-in-Residence (Facebook office, Austin). Group exhibitions and accolades with art collective Lakes Were Rivers include “Strange Pilgrims” (The Contemporary Austin), “Contemporary Photographic Practice and the Archive” (Harry Ransom Center, Austin), “Best Museum Exhibition” (2015-2016 winner/ 2013 nominee, Austin Critics Table Awards), “Critic’s Pick” (Artforum, Nashville Scene), and “Idea Fund Grant” (Warhol Foundation).
