¡A Viva Voz! Celebration:

LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies and Collections proudly presents the 14th annual ¡A Viva Voz! Celebration of Latina/o Arts and Culture: “Historias/Viajes: A Conversation with Marta Sánchez and Liliana Wilson,” moderated by Norma E. Cantú. The event takes place Thursday, April 14, 2016, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Benson Latin American Collection. The event is free and open to the public and includes a reception.

Visual artists Marta Sánchez and Liliana Wilson appear at the Benson to inaugurate an exhibition of their selected works, titled Historias/Viajes. Scholar and author Norma E. Cantú will lead a discussion with the artists.

About the Artists

A native of San Antonio, Texas, painter Marta Sánchez is deeply inspired by traditional Mexican folk art expressions. She is recognized primarily for her retablo paintings, an offspring of traditional Mexican prayer paintings. Sánchez is the co-author of Transcendental Train Yard, with Norma E. Cantú, a book that pairs her artwork with Cantú’s poetry.

Liliana Wilson was born in Valparaíso, Chile. She studied law at the Catholic University of Valparaiso, Chile. In 1977, she visited the United States and subsequently settled in Austin. Her artwork is featured in the volume Ofrenda: Liliana Wilson’s Art of Dissidence and Dreams, edited by Cantú.

¡A Viva Voz! is the annual celebration of U.S. Latina/o arts and culture hosted at the Benson Latin American Collection on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin. It was established to invite community members to visit and learn about the Benson Latin American Collection and its rich resources on Latinas/os and Mexican Americans. Yearly events have featured musicians, poets, visual artists, and cultural critics.

The exhibition Historias/Viajes runs from April 14 through July 15, 2016.
