The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Austin was founded with the purpose of educating the public and preserving the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. Formed in 1976, the group now boasts about 250 members and entertains and educates thousands of Central Texas residents every year.

      The Mikado is a wonderfully delightful operetta that you will not want to miss. It is at the Travis High School Performing Arts Center. The opera starts off with an overture performed by a live orchestra directed by Jeffrey Jones-Ragona, which alone makes the show worth seeing. You will love the performers who sing with grace and gusto, and who portray their characters with much humor. Though the production is clocks in at 3 hours every second is filled with rich music, hilarious lyrics, and stellar performances. Don't miss it. Collapse

      The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Austin’s production of The Mikado is beautifully done. The costuming by John Lopez is exquisite, gorgeous kimonos of every color and intricate wigs transport you to the village of Titipu. The witticisms of the era are just as fresh today – one of the endearing qualities of this opera. Listen carefully to see if you can hear the local references sprinkled throughout the performance. The G&S Society has some amazing vocal talent – Holton Johnson, Tamsen Cohagan and of course, Russell Gregory (who puts in a wonderful performance as the Mikado). Spencer Reichman’s deep voice is showcased during the madrigal in the second act – look for this young man to go far as he develops his art. Take the time to experience The Mikado – before it’s gone!       Being the first Gilbert and Sullivan production I've seen off screen, I was very impressed with the performances. The acting and singing were superb with the actresses and actors well cast and believable. A shakesperian comic tragedy set to music. The live orchestra interpreted Sullivan's compositions flawlessly. The set design was clean and simple without feeling minimalistic and captured the feel of each scene with only a change in day, evening, and night. The costume designer obviously paid attention to detail. Collapse

      I thoroughly enjoyed The Yeomen of the Guard, and you will, too. The singing was so good and you will find yourselves laughing so much. The leads, Michelle Hache, Patricia Combs, Holton Johnson, David Fontenot especially, were excellent. The music direction and tech work are very very good. I was very happy to see Jay Young with a minor solo. If you want to have an enjoyable evening you will not be disappointed. Collapse

      I had a wonderful time at the Gilbert and Sullivan Society's Production of Yeomen of the Guard. Across the board the performances were spot on. The singing was incredible. Reaching many comedic highs and unexpected dramatic lows, every audience member goes on an entertaining ride. I really enjoyed the full ensemble performances (the finale is simply divine)- their voices filled the auditorium with a cacophony of sound that was just spectacular. Go check it out before it closes. I highly highly recommend it. Collapse

      One of G&S's "darker" stories. Those out there who are not "G&S" groupies (or for those who favor opera), this may be the show for you. For those who are "G&S" lovers, don't worry, this production has enough patter songs, frolicking, and goofy humor to keep you smiling. I particularly enjoyed operatically trained soprano Michelle Hache "Elsie" and tenor Holton Johnson "Fairfax". Arthur DiBianca "Jack Point", brings both humor and vulnerability beautifully to his character. Director Ralph MacPhail, Jr. who is a bit of a G&S "guru" directed the show in traditional fashion, and musical director Jeffrey Jones-Ragona did a lovely job on the musical end. The venue itself (Travis HS) was not my favorite (poor acoustics and site lines), and the orchestra was lacking from time to time. It was also quite a long show, at just about three hours. Nonetheless, a good performance, and one to go see if you like operetta or want to explore the world of Gilbert & Sullivan. Collapse
