A high school gymnasium becomes a concert hall when the ASO goes “on the road” to play for area high school students. These 45 minute concerts are designed especially for teens and feature classical favorites, contemporary selections and an orchestrated version of the schools fight song. Making the experience part of their world , the concert also includes student musicians: top band and orchestra students sit side-by side ASO musicians on a selection, the soloist is a student and one of the compositions is composed by a student!. The ASO visits AISD High schools each year on a rotating basis. The Conductor or the Master of Ceremonies for the concert gives a brief history of each symphonic selection before it is played and the orchestra often plays specific musical examples to illustrate the commentary. ASO provides TEKS based study units for the high school English teachers to use in classroom instruction prior to the concert. High school concerts are a real “alternative” music experience for young people!
