Champion is a newly-minted gallery that features edgy, serious contemporary art by up-and-coming artists, both local and international, side-by-side. The gallery opened in fall 2010 with a group show of twenty-three artists, from locals Adam Schreiber and Barry Stone; New Yorkers Richard Mosse and Xaviera Simmons; to the Netherlands’ Jan Wattjes who just received "Buning-Brongers", an important painting award for young artists in Amsterdam; to a video installation by Londoner Ben Rivers, who just won the Baloise Art Prize at Art 42 Basel. This debut exhibition was an ode to efforts of revitalization here in downtown Austin. Thematically the show examined the tension between naturalism and artifice by artists who use methodologies to throw context into question – from grandiose scenes of real remnants and ruins to contrived narratives that resemble theatrical sets.

The gallery’s agenda seeks to illuminate new ideas in art practice within the new breeding ground of Austin – a relative bohemia for artists next to a disparate lack of a collecting culture – and to inspire vigorous debate about the nature of contemporary art. Artists we work with make their mark over time and many also exhibit at important international venues.

The word "Champion" is used as a call to action for collectors to champion the forward-looking and fertile minds of artists whom we target that deserve a platform on the international art stage. Aesthetically, the gallery tends to exhibit painting, works on paper, and video installation that is transportative, deeply imaginative; work that challenges the way in which we see – where physicality, wonderment, and vitality is key.
