The Scottish Rite Bodies of Austin are located at the historic Scottish Rite Theatre and Temple, across the street from the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin’s historic Capital District. Since construction in 1869, the building has enjoyed a vibrant history hosting decades of theatrical productions, social events and weddings, and serving as home to the Scottish Rite Masons. Originally built by a German social group in 1871 to host operas, musicals, gymnastic exhibitions and serve as a biergarten, the hall was purchased by the Freemasons in 1910 and restored as a meeting place. Eventually, the Scottish Rite leadership felt the building’s historical atmosphere should be shared with the community. Today, Scottish Rite Children’s Theatre and Melodrama Theatre both utilize the theater for their events. Scottish Rite Community and Children’s Theatre is the parent company to both Scottish Rite Children’s Theatre and Scottish Rite Melodrama Theatre. Their mission is to provide year-round, quality, fun and affordable family entertainment. They hope patrons leave with an appreciation of good theatre, and an enlightened awareness of the building and its contribution to Austin culture.
