The Department of Theatre and Dance at The University of Texas at Austin exists as a diverse educational community of artists and scholars who are committed to excellence in teaching, research, creative practice and service. The UTPAC trains students to work in professional arts environments as well as educate them in the rich traditions of theatre and dance. They encourage students to be critical spectators as well as professional practitioners, and educate them to the importance of arts advocacy and promotion. They believe students should hold deep, complex understandings of theatre and dance so that they can participate in the widest possible cultural conversations about the arts. The Winship Drama Building houses the Oscar G. Brockett Theatre, B. Iden Payne Theatre and the Lab Theatre: The Oscar G. Brockett Theatre is an intimate setting of 200 seats. Utilized most frequently for student productions of the Department of Theatre & Dance, this theatre helps develop budding new talent into experienced performers as part of the PAC’s educational mission. The 500 seat B. Iden Payne Theatre provides the perfect setting for plays and dance performances, allowing audiences a close-up look at the action on stage.
