Reading Between the Lions

“To complement the architecture of the Windsor Park Branch Library and evoke the classical tradition of lions as the majestic guardians of public places, I created a bronze sculpture of a male lion with a cub curled between his front legs. The mature lion, with mane full, head erect, and eyes forward, poses on a rectangular concrete pedestal, allusive of the traditional pose. This lion, however, rests naturally with one leg dangling over the edge of the base and is presented in realistic details. To add a small twist on the traditional, somewhat forbidding, guardian lion, I’ve included a small cub in this piece. Because libraries are wonderful places for family, I feel that the inclusion of the cub and the depiction of a regal father and son appeal greatly to Windsor Park Library’s young patrons and their parents.” – Paul Bond
