The Austin Astronomical Society was founded in August 1969 (a month after the first manned lunar landing of Apollo 11) by Austin residents and University of Texas students interested in astronomy and the space sciences. The general assembly, which numbers over 300, meets on a monthly basis on the UT campus and hosts public star parties out at Canyon of the Eagles, in Burnet, at their Eagle Eye Observatory.
