Jazz at St. James

Presented by St. James Episcopal Church at St. James Episcopal Church

Jazz at St. James is a must-attend gathering on the East Side for jazz fans in and around Austin.

The festival is comprised two days and nights of concerts and workshops, open to the public. Join the most appreciative audience in Austin for a special night of jazz at St. James.

This year’s headliner is Carmen Bradford, an Austin native. She will be accompanied by the John Mills Quintet. Count Basie first put Carmen on the map, fresh out of Huston-Tillotson University.

The daughter of singer Melba Joyce and the innovative trumpeter Bobby Bradford, Carmen hails from a long line of professional jazz musicians. She is currently a professor of jazz at USC. Carmen continues to perform and record worldwide.

St. James is celebrating it’s 75th anniversary this year. The church was originally founded by black Episcopalians who were not welcome in white churches in 1941.

Today St. James is widely know for its diversity and radical hospitality, an East Side institution. Jazz has always been an important part of the community and its service, culminating each year in a non-denominational celebration that welcomes visitors from all over Texas.

Don’t miss this Austin tradition!
