SWEENEY TODD: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

SWEENEY TODD: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Presented by Austin Theatre Project at BAM Performing Arts Center

SWEENEY TODD: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Austin Theatre Project proudly presents the Stephen Sondheim masterpiece Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The musical received eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical for its original Broadway Production. More Tony Awards were received by the 2005 Broadway Revival and another critically acclaimed production was found in the West End in 2012.

Directed by Jeff Hinkle (Falsettos, Carrie: the Musical, The Great American Trailer Park Musical), the ATP production will feature a more intimate staging with audience members seated at tables on the stage area. David Blackburn, ATPs Artistic Director and the productions Music Director says, We wanted to present a Sweeney Todd that was different that the productions most people have seen. As were best-known for our intimate chamber musicals, we wanted to apply that feeling to this show that is often presented on a very grand scale. On the other hand, while this production may be a bit smaller-scaled, the talent on the stage is gigantic!

Making his Austin Theatre Project debut, Chicago resident and Austin theatre legend Joe Penrod will be playing the role of the demon barber Sweeney Todd. Cathie Sheridan (Carrie: the Musical), another legend in the Austin theatre scene, will be pushing meat pies as the delightfully scheming Mrs. Lovett. The roles of Anthony Hope and Johanna will be played by two newcomers to ATP, Creighton Moench and Sara Zeringue. Meg Steiner (National Pastime, Bending Broadway) will play the Beggar Woman and Mike De Anda (Dogfight) will be seen as Tobias Ragg.

Rounding out the cast are Craig McKerley (First Date) as the Beadle, newcomer Rick Felkins as the evil Judge Turpin, and newcomers Ben Seidman and Joshua Cookingham as Pirelli and Jonas Fogg, respectively. Susannah Crowell (The Rocky Horror Show, Bending Broadway), newcomer Dionsysus Henderson, and Suzanne Orzech (Baby, Company, Bending Broadway) are also featured in the show.

Choreography and Musical Staging has been created by Maranda Moody, assisted by Maci McFarlin.Sound Design for Sweeney Todd will be by Jeff Miller and James Jennings will once again design his spectacular, award-winning lighting. Set design is by Jim Schuler and Veronica Prior will design the steampunk look of the costumes.
