Living Springs Screening and Community Event

Presented by Living Springs and SPLASH! Sheffield Education Center. at Zilker Hillside Theatre

Living Springs and the Splash! invite you to join us for “Fun Friday”  a Community Meet-Up, Sing-Along and Screening Event

Bring your picnics and set up your blankets. The evening will kick off at 6:00 p.m. with a fun and informative gathering of community groups committed to the on-going protection of Barton Springs, Creek and the Edwards Aquifer. Learn about what is being done to protect the Springs and how YOU can get involved.

We will be joined by the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department, The Save Barton Creek Association, the Save Our Springs Alliance, the Friends of Barton Springs Pool, the Barton Springs Conservancy and others.

At 7:15, “Mr Habitat,” a.k.a Bill Oliver will he will teach us the Barton Springs anthem, Barton Springs Eternal.

The screening will begin at the Zilker Hillside Theater at dark—approximately 7:35 p.m.

Our program will include:

Spirit Waters: Native Americans gather water and offer their smoke at Eliza Springs, one of the four fountain springs of the Coahuiltecan creation story. In deference to the sacred nature of the ceremony, original animation by Jeanne Stern depicts the ceremony.

“A Little Bit of Heaven”  Born in 1913, Beverly Sheffield served the City of Austin as both Aquatics Director and Austin Parks and Recreation director from 1946-1973, but it wasn’t until he was in his fifties that he became a regular swimmer.

Plants: Biologist, Liza Colucci takes us on an underwater journey to the unique plants found at the springs.

Waterworks: Back when Austin really was weird, Choreographer Dee McCandless and collaborator Gene Menger created site-specific art dances at the Springs. The dances featured professional dancers and Barton Springs swimmers.

As a bonus, enjoy the amazing underwater world of Barton Springs accompanied by original music created especially for Living Springs by composer Graham Reynolds.

Before or after the screening, take a refreshing dip in the Springs.

No rain date, but other opportunities to see Living Springs indoors include.
