Kyle Turner and Friends

Presented by Women in Jazz Association, inc. and One World Theatre at One World Theatre

Women in Jazz presents Kyle Turner and Friends on September 4, 2016 at the One World Theatre, Austin, TX.  This combination of saxophone from Kyle Turner, Michael Ward on the violin, trumpeter Joey “Papa J” Sommerville and sultry vocals of Pamela Hart is the perfect mix for a dynamic evening of traditional jazz, smooth jazz, blues and a little old school R&B.  Get ready to shout for more!

Kyle Turner is a creative and innovative artist that has warmed the hearts of many with the sultry musical notes birthed from his instrument, the saxophone! Kyle’s musical career has provided him the opportunity to share the stage with such artist as Luther Vandross, Johnny Taylor, Bobby Lyle, Joe Sample, Kirk Whalum, Regina Belle, Al Jarreau, and Michael Henderson just to name a few.

Michael Ward is one of the few instrumental musicians who have chosen to play jazz on violin. He has performed with some of the world’s top entertainers throughout his career including Wynton Marsalis, Lionel Hampton, Ronnie Laws, Al Hirt, Najee and Kirk Whalum to name a few. He has been documented on more than fifty different recordings covering several styles from Jazz to Blues, Country and Zydeco, Cajun, Pop and Hip Hop. All three releases, “Just Me,” “Laid Back” and “Make a Wish” were featured in Downbeat and Jazz Times magazines. His smooth deliverance and stage presence will knock you off your feet awaiting another breathtaking performance.

Trumpeter Joey “Papa J” Sommerville’s, unique style of new millennium blues with jazz, funk, and gospel in?uences, is delivered with infectious pop sensibilities.  It’s this, coupled with his humor, warmth and showmanship that drives the crowd crazy, creating an almost cult-like following of fans.  His latest album, the ironically titled “Overnight Sensation” has received excellent reviews including a ringing endorsement from USA Today. The album continues to ride the top of the jazz radio charts. It features Joey along with notable guests, Jeff Lorber, Jeff Bradshaw, Elan Trotman and jazz guitar icon, Earl Klugh.

Pamela Hart, Austin’s First Lady of Jazz, warms the heart of any audience with her pitch, clarity, and presence.  Pamela has shared the stage with her idol, Miss Nancy Wilson, and has opened for many other national acts such as Dianne Reeves, Rachelle Ferrell, Kirk Whalum, Patrice Rushen, ‘Fathead’ Newman, Jazz in Pink, and more. Pamela and her husband Kevin Hart produced (and she has performed in) the semi-annual Women in Jazz Concert Series—the greatest events for female jazz musicians in Texas—1994 through 2016.
