An interactive, participatory experience where you and a partner roleplay a series of short vignettes that make up the fabric of a 60-year romantic relationship from the privacy of your home.
The Homes We Build is an interactive, participatory experience where you and a partner roleplay a series of short vignettes that make up the fabric of a 60-year relationship. Over the course of 4 hours, you and your partner will co-create characters (or play yourselves) while experiencing relationship milestones large and small that evoke joy, laughter, pain, mortality, insecurity, and love, all from the comfort of your own home. This is an interactive, live theatrical experience for two people to co-create together in your own home without an audience.
Past participants have felt nostalgia for a life they never lived and marveled at their own ability to create an entire fictional life together in a short period of time.
You will choose between playing yourself or creating a character. The experience is designed to be inclusive of all gender identities and sexual orientations and uses gender neutral language throughout.
Content warnings: themes of mortality, simulated recreational drug use, the death of an animal, medical emergencies, and possible implications of sex. There is also the possibility of themes around addiction, gambling, and infidelity.
We know this event is a little unusual, so if you’re on the fence, here is what some past participants had to say about it:
“It’s something I will remember forever — that I will remember a shocking number of different parts of forever. It’s funny to make so many memories in a day. Even to feel maudlin about them, mourning a pretend relationship. The moment that I realized it was almost over, I felt so strongly the desire to savor my last minutes in that reality.” — Bradford
“We can say from a standpoint of 2 people in a 15-year relationship that no matter what stage of a relationship, this piece is here to remind us that we can find intimate moments when we least expect them. That even after feeling like you’ve gotten to know your partner there are still things that can be prompted to surprise and touch you deep in your heart about them.” — Travis and Sara
“To call The Homes We Build an “experiential theatre project,” as its creators have dubbed it, is a profound reduction of the depth and poignancy of this experience.” — Justin
“Very deep and transformative, sort of a psychedelic trip without the need of dropping any acid…” — Davide
