The 100-year anniversary celebration at the historic Hopewell Rosenwald School located in Cedar Creek, just west of Bastrop, will include a variety of events that both tell the story of how the school came to be, acknowledges those who were responsible for it, and brings the story to life in a live production.  The three-day celebration will include an open house/tour of the school sampling of foods historically enjoyed at this time and other family-friendly events.  Former students from throughout the county are invited to share their oral history. With a grant from the National Parks Service, the Hopewell Rosenwald School of Cedar Creek has been restored and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in July 2015

 Rosenwald Schools

Booker T. Washington of the Tuskegee Institute and Julius Rosenwald, philanthropist and president of Sears Roebuck, built state-of-the art schools for African-American children across the South. The effort has been called the most important initiative to advance black education in the early 20th century. The Hopewell Rosenwald School-Cedar Creek is one of the more than 5000 built for African American students in the early 1920s.
