RECOLORATION PROCLAMATION and THE AFRO-DIXIE REMIXES with John Sims

RECOLORATION PROCLAMATION and THE AFRO-DIXIE REMIXES with John Sims

Presented by Austin Film Society at AFS Cinema

Please join us for this special screening and discussion with artist John Sims about his work. Sims, a Detroit native, is a Sarasota-based conceptual/multimedia artist, writer, and activist who creates art and curatorial projects spanning the areas of installation, performance, text, music, film, and large-scale activism, informed by mathematics, design, the politics of white supremacy, sacred symbols/anniversaries, and poetic/political text. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, CNN, NBC News, USA Today, NPR, The Guardian, Nature, and Scientific American, among others.

His multi-media Recoloration Proclamation has defied the continuous use of the Confederate flag as a rallying banner for racists by confrontations in various gallery installations and public events. The film captures his work with the Recoloration Proclamation project. The film will be followed by a discussion/lecture by John Sims. The discussion will be followed by a screening of Sim’s film The Afro-Dixie Remixes, documenting a powerful listening session of multiple versions of the Confederate anthem ‘Dixie,’ which Sims staged in a Virginia church that was formerly a stronghold of the Confederacy.
