Legado Ancestral Workshop, Afro-herencia History & Dance

Legado Ancestral Workshop, Afro-herencia History & Dance

Presented by Puerto Rican Cultural Center at Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance and Cultural Center

Featuring live music and dance, and guest master teachers, this OUTDOOR workshop will teach:
– the history that evolved our folkloric traditions,
– traditional percussive dance steps of Mexico (zapateados),
– piquetes (dance moves) from Puerto Rico’s Bomba tradition.

The workshop will culminate in an exciting duel between Mexican and Puerto Rican dance traditions that the Bomba drums will answer! This exciting cultural exchange will be led by guest masters including:
– Bomba master – Pablo Luis Rivera PhD
– Master choreographer – Raul de la Paz of Ballet Sangre Viva
– Chuy Chacon & Roy Lozano’s Ballet Folklorico de Texas
– Puerto Rican Folkloric dancers and musicians!

This workshop is part of our larger Celebrando 2022 Heritage Project. It will be followed by a picnic celebration and a festival in June.

The Celebrando 2022 Heritage Project is made possible in part through funding and support by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, and Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Our cultural center is still standing thanks to CARES/ARP/COVID recovery support from all of the above, as well as the Mid-America Arts Alliance, the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture, and the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
