Worn, Torn, Cut & Calloused

Presented by ICOSA Collective at ICOSA

Worn, Torn, Cut & Calloused

ICOSA Collective is proud to present Worn, Torn, Cut & Calloused, an exhibition of new works by Jonas Criscoe and Sarah Hirneisen exploring the aesthetics of detritus and decay through the lens of surface, form, material and composition. Criscoe looks to the rural backroads of Texas for inspiration, the faded facades of old buildings, the forgotten towns. Hirneisen takes inspiration from natural cycles of growth, decay, and renewal, using the process of casting to enshrine and preserve.

Jonas Criscoe is an interdisciplinary artist whose work has been exhibited throughout the United States, most notably the International Print Center in New York and the Minnesota Museum of American Art. Criscoe has also been featured in various art publications, Including Art Lies and New American Painting and has been a Jerome Fellow at the Highpoint Center for Printmaking as well as a West Prize acquisition recipient. A native of Austin, Texas, he received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York and the University of Texas at Austin, and his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Currently, he is on the Faculty at Austin Community College and the Art School at The Contemporary Austin, and is a founding member of ICOSA.

Sarah Hirneisen is an Austin based artist using three-dimensional materials and processes to elevate familiar and everyday objects. Born and raised in rural Pennsylvania, she received her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 2001 and her MFA from Mills College in 2011. Hirneisen has done residencies through Free Oakland UP and the Hungarian Multicultural Center. She has been awarded a Community Initiatives grant through the City of Austin, an Individual Artist Grant through the City of Oakland’s Cultural Arts Program and a Phelan, Murphy & Cadogan fellowship from the San Francisco Foundation for graduate students in the arts. She currently teaches sculpture at Texas State University in San Marcos. Hirneisen has exhibited her work extensively throughout the US as well as Hungary, Korea and England.
