Silent Films Out Loud - Violet Crown - November 11

Presented by One World Theatre and City of Austin Cultural Arts Division at Violet Crown

Silent Films Out Loud returns to the big screen for the fourth time on Thursday November 11th, pairing local composers with a trio of films perfectly tailored to a much needed evening of escapism. Shorts from comedic icon Buster Keaton bookend this showing, beginning with Calliope Musicals frontwoman Carrie Fussell scoring 1923’s The Balloonatic, followed by Jackie Myers putting new sounds to Georges Méliès’ pioneering sci-fi flick Le Voyage Dans la Lune (or Trip to the Moon), and ending with a collective of Akins Early College High School students known as The Akins New Music Ensemble under the direction of Thomas Mann contributing a composition to Keaton’s Convict 13 from 1920. Cinema lovers can take their seats at Violet Crown located at 434 W. 2nd Street starting at 7 p.m.

New talent and a more traditional movie experience is in store for 2021. Fussell, as leader of the colorful Austin based psychedelic-swaying outfit Calliope Musicals, has been featured on NPR Music and more recently named Artist of the Month on hometown station KUTX for April 2021. Involved since the inception of Silent Films Out Loud, Myers continues to carve out her career performing as a blues-tinged jazz pianist, organist and vocalist – releasing the live album Clementine in 2020. Originating four years ago, Mann began a side ensemble at Akins Early College High School called the The Akins New Music Ensemble for students interested in performing, composing and examining new and contemporary music beyond their current University Interscholastic League ensembles (orchestra, band, choir, and guitar). Each year, eight to 12 instrumentalists and vocalists work on innovative composition projects and attend conferences – but this will be their first commissioned score for a silent film.

Silent Films Out Loud is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department and One World Theatre.

The Cultural Arts Division of the Economic Development Department – The Cultural Arts Division of the Economic Development Department provides leadership and management for the City’s cultural arts programs and for the economic development of arts and cultural industries. The Cultural Arts Division is responsible for the Cultural Arts Funding Programs, Art in Public Places Program (AIPP), community-based arts development, and programs to assist the development of creative industries in Austin, as well as initiatives designed to support and encourage the community’s unique cultural identity and vitality.

One World Theatre – One World (OW) was founded in 1993 as an education outreach program. It began with a single multi-cultural performance presented throughout Austin Independent School District. The co-founder and Executive Director of OW, Hartt Stearns, originally received funding from the City of Austin for arts and education programs for his personal work in the schools, including assemblies, workshops and artists-in-residencies. Soon after, Stearns recognized that many other local Austin artists sought his mentorship in their own quest for city funding of arts outreach to the schools. It was in 1997 that he incorporated OW as a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit and became a sponsoring organization for other independent artists.
