Contributions of East Austin-African American Musicians to Texas Music – Front Gallery

Presented by Texas Music Museum at Texas Music Museum

This exhibit, focused on East Austin’s African-American music history, explores the musical legacies of artists whose contributions help establish Austin as a “Live Music Capital of the World”.  The exhibit includes rare photographs, biographies, historic posters and recordings, and videos of live music events.  Display cases feature items from the Victory Grill and the Piano Professors, Ernie Mae Miller, Martin Banks, and pianos of Lavada Durst and Robert Shaw and other artist’s memorabilia.  This is a multi-genre exhibit that explores Barrelhouse, Blues, Jazz, Gospel music and other music.  This fascinating, and ever expanding exhibit is the result of more than 30 years of research and documentation by Texas Music Museum in an effort to preserve the rich heritage of East Austin’s African-American musicians. This is an ongoing exhibit at the Texas Music Museum.
