Experimental Response Cinema: Films of Peggy Ahwesh with Ahwesh in Person

Presented by Austin Film Society and Experimental Response Cinema at AFS Screening Room

In collaboration with Experimental Response Cinema, the Austin Film Society welcomes internationally acclaimed film and video artist Peggy Ahwesh for a screening of past and recent experimental work. Ahwesh’s films focus on liminal moments in social relationships, political situations and sexuality. They investigate the transgressive potential those moments hold with humor, irreverence, intelligence and affection. This program is a sampler from Ahwesh’s work over four decades. The formal variety on display is matched only by its radical intensity. These experimental films create topographies of cultural identity that are guaranteed to shock, disrupt and delight any spectator willing to enter them. Ahwesh began working as a filmmaker in the 1980s, in the medium of Super 8. She has since adopted and innovated upon a variety of different media supports, film genres and exhibition formats, in the bricolage tradition. Ahwesh’s films and videos are at home in museums and galleries as well as on the film festival circuit, at the cinema and online; they have been projected in numerous shows and programs throughout Europe and North America. Ahwesh teaches film at Bard College in Annandale, NY and is represented by Microscope Gallery, Brooklyn, NY.
