Texas Flow Fest 2016: Revolve

Texas Flow Fest 2016: Revolve

Presented by Casa De Luz at Casa De Luz Auditorium

Circus and Flow Arts presenters, instructors and performers from across the US converge in Austin at the end of March for the 2nd Annual Texas FlowFest, happening at Casa de Luz.  The festival offers unique crafts and dance prop vendors, and over 40 workshops in a variety of movement disciplines including bellydance, poi spinning, hoopdance, acro-yoga and more!  Entrance to the festival and the Saturday night performance are free.

Flow arts are forms of movement and dance, stemming from circus forms of object manipulation, that utilize props to enter a state of flow, described by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi as an exhilarating transcendent way of being in which effortless control and peak skill seem to erase a sense of time. Flow arts props include poi, staff and hoops; dancers manipulate props to add to the expressive qualities of their dance. The result is an awe-inspiring visual spectacle of improvised movement that inspires an audience to reconsider kinetic possibilities. Master classes and workshops in flow arts, yoga and dance will take place Satuday and Sunday at Casa de Luz.  Workshop passes to attend any of these intermediate to advanced classes start at $35 for a full day experience. Texas Flow Fest will also offer FREE workshops in yoga, poi spinning and hoopdance to the general public.

Austin’s event is one of five Flow Fests happening across the US during 2016.  Flow Fests started in south Florida, in the arts-positive environment of the city of Lake Worth.  Florida Flow Fest celebrated 5 years of joy and learning in community this past October.  Flow Fests director, artist-educator Casandra Tanenbaum, relishes the opportunity to bring the event to the Texas capitol: “The people of Austin have been warmly embracing flow arts performance in public, from the weekly jams on the steps of the capitol to the seasonal circus play dates in the park.  Flow Fests provides a space to interact with flow artists from around the US, right here in the heart of the city.”

The festival emphasizes public learning and the celebration of performance art and dance.  Returning to Austin for the second year, the 2016 installment is designed to explore the theme: REVOLVE, and asks, what do you revolve around? And what revolves around you?  This 2-day, family friendly event is sure to inspire all ages to come out and play; and of course, gives everyone the chance to join the circus without running away!
