"Us Kids Are Alone in the House", a new dance by Magdalena Jarkowiec

at Salvage Vanguard Theater

Magdalena Jarkowiec, whose soft sculpture can be seen hanging from trees and scaring away birds in local community gardens, brings her new full-length dance, “Us Kids Are Alone in the House” to the Salvage Vanguard Theater in March. The work features Magdalena’s robust, inventive, humorous and contemporary movement language and will draw non-dance audiences in with its bright set and costume design (which incorporate her soft sculpture– giantmutantdolls.com). The dance uses memories of being a kid alone at home as the starting point for its structure and choreography and will move through three distinct sections: it starts with the youthful perception that the world around us is invested with an inscrutable authority, moves to the childhood (and adult) tumult of being let loose into one’s own authority in a space that is structured by the authority of others, and arrives finally at the utterly adult realization that us kids really ARE alone in the house. We are truly abandoned, unmoored, at our own mercy. All members of the audience will be invited to pick up a self-addressed stamped envelope on their way out and will be aggressively encouraged to write a letter about what they saw, or even better, about their own childhood experiences or philosophies on the theme at hand. The work is danced by three women who have been on the rosters of well-recognized groups such as Ballet Austin II and Hubbard Street 2.
