Doug Sahm: The Man and His Music Exhibit Opening

Presented by South Austin Popular Culture Center at South Austin Popular Culture Center

The South Austin Popular Culture Center proudly presents our first exhibition of 2016 on a subject near and dear to our heart, Doug Sahm: The Man and the Music. Opening January 30th at 7:09, the exhibit will feature albums, photos, posters, and other ephemera that chronicle Sahm’s life and his impact on the Austin live music scene.

Born in San Antonio, Doug Sahm was a child music prodigy playing the guitar, fiddle, and steel guitar, and by age 14 was taking lessons from Hank Williams’ steel guitar player. Under the moniker “Little Doug”, he played nightclubs, dance halls, and cabarets in central Texas throughout the 1950s. By the time Elvis rolled through San Antonio, “Little Doug” was little no more, and Doug began to adopt influences from Blues and Soul music. Rock and Roll and the British Invasion hit San Antonio, and Doug mixed these sounds to create his own style, unique to his Texan soul.

Please join us as we seek to remember his life and his accomplishments, and celebrate the man he was behind the genius. The Exhibit runs from January 30th to March 26, 2016. The opening reception begins Saturday January 30th at 7:09 pm featuring live music and light refreshments with a suggested donation of $5. SouthPop members please come an hour early for first crack at food and drink, and free admission. There will be no parking at the Center, so please park on Collier Street. The exhibit will be on view during SouthPop’s regular hours, 1-6pm Thursdays through Sunday. Admission during regular hours is always free.
