Presented by Austin Film Festival at Vesper Austin

Displaced from New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina, Cheryl has lived in San Antonio for the past 15-years. Never healing from the death of her son by drowning during Katrina, she uses sex and alcohol to both numb the pain and punish herself. Hector, who was arrested at the Texas-Mexico border a few months back with his young daughter and forced to leave her in the U.S., returns with the hope of breaking her out of the ICE Detention Center that she’s confined to. Cheryl and Hector meet by chance, when Hector arrives at a hotel, Cheryl’s place of business, attempting to get a job he was promised when he paid the coyote who brought him over. When Hector arrives at the hotel there is no job and he is thrown out for causing a scene. Cheryl, feeling sorry for Hector, takes him in and lets him move in with her. This chance meeting becomes the thing that Cheryl and Hector need as they lean on each other to get through their toughest times. San Antonio may not be their home, and ultimately neither one may be able to exist there, but it is the place where they find healing and closure.
