Girls Rock Austin is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering womxn, trans and gender-expansive individuals through music education, mentorship and performance.

In order to ensure the safety and health of all our campers, staff and volunteers, Girls Rock Austin has transformed our award-winning, in-person camp experience to an online platform so our campers can feel like a rockstar from the safety of their own homes.

GRA’s Virtual Camp sessions (for ages 8-17) will include live instrument instruction, collaborative workshops and a livestream showcase at the end of each session. Plus all campers will receive the GRA Jam Book, an interactive music manual, activity book and journal. GRA will continue to provide musical instruments and necessary gear for any Austin-area campers that need them.

At GRA’s Virtual Camp, experienced instructors provide informative lessons for guitar, bass, percussion, keyboards, or voice. No musical experience is required (we love beginners)! Campers are then formed into a band of their peers to share their ideas and collaborate to write original songs and participate in enriching workshops both live and pre-recorded that campers can do on their own schedule to avoid screen fatigue. These workshops are designed to cultivate discussions on topics relevant to our campers and their experiences in the world. The camp week ends on Saturday with a livestreamed performance showcase where the campers will debut their original songs and artwork.

We understand that every family’s financial situation is different. GRA firmly believes financial, physical, and social barriers shouldn’t prevent anyone from gaining the self-esteem that comes from creative expression, and thus provide scholarships or financial aid. We highly encourage parents and guardians to apply for full or partial financial assistance if needed (the amount of tuition able to paid neither increases or decreases their chances of getting accepted into any programs). Girls Rock Austin is much more than a rock camp — it is a mentorship and social justice organization. We believe that creativity, positivity, and community are key elements of personal and collective empowerment and positive social change. Dedicating time and safe spaces for important discussions increases campers’ sense of support and reiterates the importance of creative expression.

Alumnae and their parents report that the unique experience changed their lives, and after camp they feel more inclined to try new things; creatively, academically, and socially. Participants are more confident and expressive, have better teamwork and collaboration skills, and are better prepared to navigate life’s challenges. Many girls come away from camp with adult mentors and peer bonds that continue years after camp.
