AFS Presents: 10

Presented by Austin Film Society at AFS Cinema

DIRECTED BY BLAKE EDWARDS

USA, 1979, Digital, 122 min

The film that became a massive cultural and commercial sensation was turned down by a number of major studios before Orion took a chance on it. As everything goes wrong for our hero, played by Dudley Moore, everything goes right for writer/director Blake Edwards. The serendipitous casting of Bo Derek in the small but pivotal role of the titular dream woman helped to make the film’s stills and poster inescapable, and Edwards’ sure touch makes the film more than just a fad but a true classic deserving of reassessment in light of Edwards’ career as a whole. Moore plays a rich and famous composer, in a serious relationship with singer Julie Andrews, who spies a young bride at a wedding and becomes infatuated with her. Moore’s middle-age crisis reaches epic proportions as he pursues her and makes a serious fool of himself. This is Blake Edwards at his best, alternating between slapstick and urbane comedy. With Robert Webber, Dee Wallace, Brian Dennehy and Ravel’s unforgettable “Bolero” on the soundtrack.
