Bharata Natyam is an ancient South Indian art form that has evolved and transformed over centuries with a rich movement vocabulary that allows for unbounded expression of various concepts from mythology to current issues.

Over time, practitioners have imbued the art with their individual expression, resulting in a multitude of branches with stylistic and conceptual variants that form its rich tapestry today.
“Threads of Tradition” is an informal salon series produced by Austin Dance India in an intimate setting that began last fall and its second edition will feature professional performances by Bharata Natyam dancers from Austin and Odissi dancer from Michigan.

With this series Austin Dance India’s goal is to celebrate the diversity within our dance community by bringing together artistes to give audiences a glimpse of both the breadth and depth of this art form. It also seeks to initiate dialogue between dance practitioners, educators, and students who are the threads that weave together our community.

This year, three very different performers who are all experienced professionals are featured. Bharata Natyam dance by Preya Mangalat Patel, Director of Devi School of Dance and Austin Dance India’s own Artistic Director and Austin Arts Hall of Famer, Anuradha Naimpally.

Special guest is veteran performer and Odissi dancer, Sreyashi Dey of Akshara based in Michigan. Sreyashi will present a unique one-woman dance theater based on the lesser known Mahabharata character, Hidimba.

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience these three incredible dancers up close, interact and ask questions in a post-performance Q&A! Refreshments will be served.

This project is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division which is a part of the City of Austin Economic Development Department and also in part by the Austin Creative Alliance.
