This exhibit is an homage to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Closing day.
The works in this show include mix media such as serigraphs, retablos, figurines, textiles, pop culture objects, etc. It is derived from the Collections of Gilberto Cárdenas, Dolores García, and La Peña.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, in Spanish Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, is the Patroness of Mexico and has evolved from a loving and caring mother figure to the indigenous peoples of that country to now being a symbol of justice to marginalized and oppressed communities in the U.S. and beyond.
The 12th of December is a significant day to millions in the Americas as it is the Feast Day of OLG. I was introduced to OLG by my Granny, Maria Teresa Almarez, who was a Mexican immigrant from Durango, and lived with my family throughout my youth. I can remember her bedroom being filled with numerous OLG statues, figurines, prints and beautiful imagery that adorned her room. My Granny was a very faithful and devout Catholic and had a special devotion to OLG. She passed that devotion to several generations in our family. This show is in loving memory of Maria Teresa Almarez. Que Viva La Virgen de Guadalupe!
