Penumbra, noun. ; is the partially shaded outer region of the shadow cast by an opaque object

What exists in the space blending two extremes of a shadow and direct light? How does an organism transferring shells survive? From the privacy and comfort of a dwelling to a public social sphere. In “Penumbra: A Story of Remote Work” I display work where I explore the deterioration of interaction and production of imagination in isolation.

“My interests live in exploration of absurd and messy human narratives. I want to create an opportunity to live among objects and within compositions that take shape in poorly rendered, unbalanced symmetry. A storyline will always drive the nature of my work, however, it is my intention to leave doors open and questions unanswered for the viewer, so they may assign their own meaning to the making. I communicate with impulsive, haphazard systems collaged against blocks of downy, transparent layers by way of painting, drawing, metal and found object sculpture.”

HISTORY & ABOUT CLOUD TREE STUDIOS & GALLERY
Cloud Tree Studios & Gallery is located in East Austin in a vintage Quonset hut built in 1948. It has been a workshop to wood artist and manager of the space, Brian David Johnson since 2016. Prior to 2016, Beaman Metal Company operated out of the row of huts since the mid 70’s. Additional studios and a woodshop house local artists working in various mediums that contribute to the creative energy of the space.

This project is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department. Visit Austin at NowPlayingAustin.com. Sponsors include Firestone Brewery and The Roadie ATX.
