Choral and instrumental music from colonial-era Mexico
As in Spain, music played an enormously important role in the day-to-day life of a Mexican cathedral, occupying a central place in not only the Mass, but also other daily services such as Vespers and Matins. This year’s installment of our annual performance of Latin American early music will feature a musical tour of four of Mexico’s most musically prominent cathedrals: Mexico City, Oaxaca, Puebla, and Durango. The concert will feature secular and sacred works by Salazar, Sumaya, Jerúsalem, Billoni, and more, and will include a number of pieces that have not been performed before in the United States, with several having not been performed since they were composed nearly three centuries ago.
