Ron Fink and the Rowdies are from the Dallas area. They have turned heads in their three ATJS appearances, and more is expected this time. Anyone who has not heard this very special ensemble should make an effort to catch them November 17.
Most of the Rowdies are North Texas music educators, and all are really good musicians. They are spearheaded by three mainstays of past All-Star concerts: Bob Krenkel on reeds, Brian Standridge on trumpet and Gene LeBeaux on trombone. Banjoist Scott Whitfield is nationally-known, and tubist Carl Kleinsteuber is highly accomplished as a jazz and classical musician. Kent Ellingson is a fine pianist, and Ron Fink holds the group together on drums.
The Rowdies favor the professional-level written arrangements. They have the classical training to read these intricate charts, and the innate jazz sense to make them swing. It’s a great combination, and one which is difficult to bring off. Austin Traditional Jazz Society strives to bring in festival-level groups if possible, and the Rowdies have shown they are just that in their two previous concerts for the Society. This should be a notable Austin jazz event.
