Dance Africa Fest 2019!

Presented by Dance Africa Fest and Lannaya Drum & Dance at Balance Dance Studios

On September 28-29 in Austin, TX, Dance Africa Fest presents a powerful weekend conference of workshops focused on dances of the African diaspora! Taught by leading experts, these 90-minute workshops explore a unique blend of traditional and modern dance techniques, accompanied by professional musicians. Highlighting dances from Haiti, Cuba, Mali, and the US! Includes a FREE Vendor Market on Sunday, Sept 29th.

Workshops:

1/ Cuba: Orisha dance (Afro Cuban dance) with Alexis Zanety. Live drumming by percussionist Lázaro Martínez;

2/ Haiti: Dance Culture of Ayiti (Haitian Vodou dance) with Jean-Sebastien Duvilaire, with live drumming;

3/ Mali: Malian dance (West African dance), from beginner to intermediate/advanced levels with Souleymane Solo Sana. Beginner level classes are FREE/Donation-based classes. Live drumming by percussionist Di Andree Dukes;

4/ USA: The New Orleans Original BuckShop (with live brass band): Michelle N. Gibson; and Afro Modern (fuses African diasporic modern dance techniques, recognizing the contribution that dances of the African diaspora have given in support of codified techniques with Michelle N. Gibson. Live drumming by Lázaro Martínez.

Presented in partnership with Lannaya Drum & Dance, and Gbeda Acupuncture and Sound Medicine.

TICKETS
$20.00 per workshop. Pre-registration recommended, as space is limited.
Pre-registration required for FREE/DONATION-BASED workshops.
Online tickets available here (price includes processing fee) *** We will sell tickets at the door for any remaining spaces. Cash door payments will not have a fee. Credit card payments will have a nominal processing fee.

TWO FREE/DONATION-BASED Malian dance classes for youth and beginners (kids don’t have to stay the whole time; adult beginners are welcome to stay for the class duration). Class participants MUST select the desired class day and pre-register here to secure a place in class. *** Youth especially encouraged to attend. Ages 13 and younger must have parent or guardian on site (parents don’t have to take class if you don’t want).

VOLUNTEEER 
Volunteers who work for two (2) or more hours may attend one (1) workshop for free. Register here to volunteer in exchange for class.

VENDOR MARKETPLACE
From 12 noon – 6pm Sunday, September 29, 2019 only. Free admission. The festival hosts a market featuring unique and handmade goods, crafts.
