Community Valentine

Community Valentine

Presented by Denise Prince and City of Austin Cultural Arts Division at Blackmail Boutique

While you stroll down the best half mile of everything Austin (South Congress) or other cultural and nightlife districts such as E 6th Street and Cesar Chavez east of Interstate 35 or when you pop into Nubian Queen Lola’s Cajan Soul Food keep your eyes open for images from artist Denise Prince’s collaboration with children and grannies. Their Community Valentine is a series of lushly styled and color saturated portraits of youth (from a wide variety of ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds) and one high flying granny. Girls, teens and grandmas created many costume pieces from scratch and pose in some of them. The fantastic worlds that we peek into are both sophisticated and whimsical. On Sunday, September 27th you might be so lucky as to find one creature who stepped out of the storybook world wandering around between the 2nd Street district and the Capitol Building.

Photographs on storefronts at Blackmail Boutique at 1202 S Congress Ave, Nubian Queen Lola’s Cajun Soul Food at 1815 Rosewood Ave (inside), 1110 E Cesar Chavez and 1200 E 6th.
