"Playing with Time: Planning Your Story from Past to Future" with Greg Garrett

Presented by Writers' League of Texas at St. Edwards University

Storytellers (including fiction writers, memoirists, and dramatic writers) know that our characters are shaped by their past experiences–and that they live in hope and fear of possible futures.

In this full-day class for the Writers League of Texas, writer and master teacher Greg Garrett will explore both theoretical and practical ways to understand the use of time in your storytelling. The class will include examples of flashbacks and flashforwards, backstory and successful exposition, writing exercises intended to give you practice in exploring time, and additional suggestions for you to experiment with after the class is over.

About the instructor:

Greg Garrett, PhD, is the author of four novels, two books of memoir, and over a dozen books on narrative, film, culture, religion, and politics. He is 2013 Centennial Professor at Baylor University, where he teaches classes in creative writing, literature, and film.
