School's Out Forever: Girls Rock Austin Camper & Volunteer Drive

Presented by Girls Rock Austin at Hotel Vegas

Join Girls Rock Austin for this fun event at Hotel Vegas where they’ll be serving up information on how you can volunteer or register your young ones can get involved with the Girls Rock Camps in July at Griffin School. The event features live music from the El Tigre (Le Tigre cover band), Stretch Panic, Jackie Venson, Van Mary and Blair Robbins of AMA, plus GRA will have a slime station, hula hoops, and will even be serving up a refreshing Girls Rocktails!
Girls Rock Austin is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering girls, non-binary and trans youth. Their volunteers are essential to the success of their summer camps, and they are always looking for more! Qualified instructors teach campers guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, or vocals. No musical experience is required to volunteer. Campers then form bands and write original songs. Camp is divided between music instruction/band practice, and workshops designed to cultivate discussions about our experiences with the world, as well as delve further into musical skills. The camp week ends on Saturday with a public showcase where the camper bands perform their original songs.

GRA firmly believes financial, physical, and social barriers should not prevent their youth from gaining the self-esteem that comes from musical and creative expression. In 2018, Girls Rock Austin provided full scholarships and tuition assistance to over 60% of their campers. Financial Aid and scholarships are available to anyone who needs it.

Girls Rock Austin is much more than a rock camp — it is a mentorship and social justice organization. GRA believes that creativity, positivity, and community are key elements of personal and collective empowerment and positive social change. A significant portion of the week is dedicated to workshops where campers can have facilitated discussions about topics affecting their daily lives, such as media literacy and body image. Dedicating time and safe spaces for these discussions increases campers’ sense of support and reiterates the importance of creative expression. Additionally, they get to learn more in-depth facets of the independent music creation process in songwriting, screen printing, recording, and history of women in music workshops.
