Presented by The VORTEX at The VORTEX

CHICKENS IN THE YARD tells the story of a family through the eyes of their four chickens. Set in Pittsburgh, this heartfelt play explores what a gay identity means for one couple, as they journey from the families that raised them to the family they choose to create together. Written by Paul Kruse and directed by Alice Stanley, CHICKENS IN THE YARD is part of the VORTEX Theater’s 2019 season, running from May 24–June 2. The play will be set on the VORTEX’s outdoor stage, which offers a unique venue to explore the themes of the play as characters navigate a gay identity through the collision of urban and rural spaces.

First produced by Hatch Arts Collective in Pittsburgh, PA, in 2013. CHICKENS IN THE YARD was recently included on The Mix list from Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago, IL. It was most recently produced June–July 2017 by the Adjusted Realists in Brooklyn, NY, where The New York Times wrote that the play, “has humor, heart and an elegant, deceptive surface simplicity.”
