The Third Thursday program offers free and open to the public monthly discussions on the craft and business of writing.
Last year, the award for best science fiction novel (the Hugo Award) was won by N.K. Jemisin for The Stone Sky, the third and final installment in her Broken Earth series. The award was notable not only because Jemisin became the first author to win the Hugo for every novel in a series (and her third win in three years) but because of the change it signaled in a genre that was for years dominated by white men and sexist/racist stereotypes. As a result, any science fiction or fantasy writer must contend with the genre as it has been shaped by Jemisin and a great and diverse array of new authors. This panel of four authors will talk about what’s new in the genre and an exciting opportunity for Austin-area writers of this genre.
