An 11-year-old Afro-Uruguayan boy Obdulio sells newspapers but can’t read or write until meeting a mysterious Maestro who teaches him. Thanks to a kindly tavern owner the boy also joins a strange group of Carnaval performers, Murgas, who satirize society and the powerful through their humorous songs, some of which the boy begins to write.
