Chandler Allens Solo Exhibition

Chandler Allens Solo Exhibition

at Big Ass Canvas Gallery

CHANDLER  ALLEN – A collection of works on exhibition starting June 25th

In an exhibition comprised of several bodies of recent artwork, Chandler Allen is revitalizing the Austin art scene for young female artists. A dual degree student in International Business and BFA Studio Art entering her senior year at the University of Texas in Austin, Ms. Allen’s solo exhibition opens at Big Ass Canvas on 2nd and Colorado on June 25th. It is the first solo exhibition the gallery has presented, and it will include photography, sculpture and video installations.

Ms. Allen’s work analyzes the female façade. It complicates the male gaze, allowing it to become noticeable, and conversely, uncomfortable for the spectator. These characterized versions of herself and her peers creates a narrative to each photograph and begs the question of how these characters relate to the artists personal history.

In her sculpture and video installations, Ms. Allen explores the role of young women as it relates to political and social events. In her series Pacmen Politicians and Blue Cowgirl, she investigates how women influenced the Texas Senate’s debate over the Campus Carry legislation, which legalizes students to carry handguns on to college campuses. In the video installation and sculpture Dream Phone: 1991-2015, a sculpture plays the audio of a satirical performance video comparing sexually biased board games from the 90’s like Dream Phone to today’s online dating.

When Ms. Allen speaks of her work, she does so with conviction.  The artist states that her grandfather’s own paintings “led to my fascination with the history of painting and how women have been both celebrated and degraded in its wake.”

Each piece incorporates a critique on her transformation from adolescence to womanhood, from schoolgirl to graduate.

The exhibition will be displayed starting June 25th  (6:30-9pm) for one week.

208 Colorado St Austin, 78701. The artist will be giving an Artist Talk at the opening.
