A subtly revolutionary work—and Vigo’s only feature-length narrative—brought poetry and grit to a dreamscape about a young married couple beginning their life aboard a barge.
A subtly revolutionary work—and Vigo’s only feature-length narrative—brought poetry and grit to a dreamscape about a young married couple beginning their life aboard a barge. The film is teeming with Vigo’s obsessions, and questions about desire, love, and hope boil beneath the surface. L’ATALANTE is preceded by TARIS, Vigo’s short commissioned film about the Olympic swimming champion Jean Taris, which incorporates the underwater cinematography that would reappear in L’ATALANTE.
