Presented by Katelena Hernandez Cowles, artist and Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center at Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center.

WHATEVER LOLA, by Katelena Hernandez Cowles

A diverse group of performers explore stereotypes by conjuring the tempestuous, seductive Latina singing stars of classic films, while encased in a 12-foot-high moving sculpture, the Lola Cage, that serves as both set and costume. Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets – but what does she give up to get it? And who can Lola be? In a dynamic piece that straddles the world of performance and visual art, artist Katelena Hernandez Cowles finds both inspiration and limitations in the well-known trope established by glamorous stars like Carmen Miranda and Rita Hayworth.
