One Page Salon

One Page Salon

Presented by Writers' League of Texas (WLT) at The North Door

One Page Salon (called “the best literary evening in town” by the Austin American-Statesman) is the brainchild of novelist, screenwriter, and comedian Owen Egerton. Four outstanding writers (who have all participated in WLT programs in the past year) will read one page from a work in progress.

  • Maya Perez: writer, producer of the PBS show Austin Film Festival’s On Story, and co-editor of the On Storybook series
  • Richard Santos, writer and book reviewer
  • Sasha West, poet and author of Failure and I Bury the Body
  • Jennifer Ziegler, author of several books, including most recently the Brewster triplets middle grade series
The brilliant and funny (and brilliantly funny) Owen Egerton will emcee (with special appearances from your friendly WLT staffers), and there will be a cash bar plus tacos from Pueblo Viejo, one of the best taco places in Austin.

During the course of the evening, writers will read a single page from a work in progress (goodbye, literary readings that go on and on and on) and answer three questions from the hosts (hello, witty banter with the incomparable Owen Egerton). Midway through, there’s a break for eating (tacos!), drinking (the cash bar will have beer, soda, and more), and talking (this. is. the. best. part.).

One person from the audience will have the opportunity to read one page of their work. If you’re interested, bring the page and grab a lottery ticket when you arrive. Also coming back, by popular demand, the One Sentence Salon (what?? How can there be so much fun had in one night??  Impossible!)

FINALLY, if all of this awesomeness isn’t enough to entice you, the Writers’ League will be making a special announcement: The Bess Whitehead Scott Creative Writing Scholarship is returning home! Starting in 2019, the WLT will once again administer this award in honor of a true Texas treasure, Bess Whitehead Scott. We’ll take a few minutes during the One Page event to recognize and thank the wonderful volunteers who have supported Bess’s legacy for so many years (if you’re one of those people, we hope you’ll join us!) and to share details about the new award. Bess’s book, You Meet Such Interesting People, will be available for a suggested donation, with the proceeds going to support the scholarships in her name.

Come for the tacos and beer, stay for the sneak peek at some terrific writings-in-progress from some awesome writers, and maybe make a donation to the Bess Whitehead Scott Scholarship Fund on your way out the door…
