This November, Concordia University Theatre presents one of the most beloved Iranian plays of the last 30 years. Award-winning A Moment of Silence, by Mohammad Yaghoubi, is a surreal, poetic, and surprisingly comic meditation on Iran’s turbulent history and and Iranians’ experience of unexpected “change” and its aftermath.
Shiva wakes up to find she has been asleep for three years. In that time, the world around her has changed drastically. Her friends and family seem different. Strangers act oddly. It’s Iran in 1980 and she has just slept through the Islamic Revolution. For the next ten years, Shiva continues to fall asleep for years at a time. Each time she wakes up there’s a new change she has to try to grasp: the war with Iraq, a series of murders of dissident artists as well as transformations in her own family. Meanwhile, the playwright creating Shiva’s story begins to receive phone calls threatening her life.
The cast includes: Ivan Ayala, Nathaniel Fomby, Ana Lara, Rebekah Mullins, Grace Nemec, Tyler Ortega, Caleb Richey, Emily Sandler, Rachel Schelen, and Jared Vickers.
A Moment of Silencewas chosen to compliment the university’s common reader for this year, Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi, and will be presented during Concordia’s Service Learning Week, the theme of which is “Justice and Our Global Neighbors.” David Kilgour, human rights activist and former member of the Canadian Parliament, will lead a discussion of the play after the Thursday night performance.
A Moment of Silence will be staged by the Director of Fine Arts, Dr. Kelly Carolyn Gordon, with assistant direction by Cooper Kelm, lighting design by Mercedes McCleary, set design by Samantha Gonzalez, costume design by Cecelia Gay, and sound design by Matthew Smith. The play will be performed in Concordia’s Black Box Theatre, November 8-10 at 7:30 pm and November 11 at 2 pm. For general admission, single play tickets are $10. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. Appropriate for adult audiences.
