Breaking societal expectations through art.
Austin artists Julie Ahmad, Billie Claire, Haley Lebeuf and Jennifer Pate, are coming together to form the group Femme-Easta. They are presenting the art installation “We Have Something to Get Off Our Chest”, a special, interactive installation aimed at breaking oppressive and sexist social expectations.
Participants are invited to choose or create their own quote or phrase outlining a social expectation that resonates with the individual and is something they “Want to get off their chest”. For example, “It’s okay to not want children,” “Dads Can Stay at Home,” or “Our rights do not diminish yours.”
Then, participants will take a Polaroid photo with their quote, and add their photo to a chalkboard wall under the phrase, “We have something to get off our chest…” With the photos all together, the wall will represent a community of people who are using their voices to stand up against sexist and oppressive social expectations.
