Friends in Low Places with Thalea String Quartet

Presented by Beerthoven Concert Series at Neill-Cochran House Museum

Note: The Friday, November 2nd at 7:30 performance will be a new venture for Beerthoven in a new space–the Neill-Cochran House Museum. The Sunday performance, November 4th at 3:00 pm, will be back in Beethoven’s usual space at the Austin Saengerrunde: 1607 San Jacinto Blvd Austin, TX 78722. As always, both events include free beer, wine, and other refreshments and are family-friendly.

Friends in Low Places is a nod to the musical conversation intrinsic in string quartet writing, from the dawn of the string quartet to the 20th century and beyond. Music will include Haydn’s Op. 20 Quartet in G Minor, Shostakovich’s 3rd Quartet, and the Lyric String Quartette by African-American composer William Grant Still.

Fans of Beerthoven are likely now familiar with our friends in invoke–the eclectic string quartet that has served as the Young Professional String Quartet in Residence at the Butler School of Music for the past two years. Beerthoven had the privilege of hosting invoke for their first off-campus performance in Austin–a privilege we now get to repeat with the Butler School’s new resident string quartet, Thalea!

The Thalea String Quartet is dedicated to bringing timeless music to audiences from all walks of life. From living rooms to concert stages around the world, the Thalea String Quartet aims to connect with audiences on a musical, emotional and personal level, from first time listeners to string quartet aficionados. They are devoted to building a new and diverse audience for chamber music through innovative programming and community engagement.

Formed in 2014 at the Zephyr International Chamber Music Festival in Courmayeur, Italy, the Thalea String Quartet has been praised for their “vibrant performance” and “sincere expressivity” (SF Classical Voice). The quartet has performed recitals in Italy, France, the United States and Canada and was appointed as the first quartet-in-residence at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music from 2015-17. The Thalea String Quartet were top prize winners at both the 2018 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and the 2018 Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition.
