SPECTRUM THEATRE COMPANY TO PRESENT TWO NEW PLAYS

Austin, TX September 1, 2018 – Spectrum Theatre Company, Austin’s only African-American theatre company, will present the Austin premiere of a reading of two short plays, Shadow Boxer, by Glenn Towery, and Poof! By Lynn Nottage, on Saturday, September 15, at 2:00 p.m. at the Vortex Theatre, 2307 Manor Road.  Admission is pay as you wish, and no advance reservations are required. A $10 donation is suggested at the door, but no one will be turned away; all are welcome. Following the reading the audience is invited to a short discussion with actors and director.  Parking is free but limited in the Vortex parking lot.

Shadow Boxer uses boxing as a powerful metaphor to explore the many challenges African-Americans have faced across several historical periods. The Boxer has a shadowy Opponent, much larger and stronger than he, whom he must warily try to conquer.

In the quirky and offbeat Poof!, a housewife comes to the end of her rope with her abusive husband, but she doesn’t expect him to spontaneously combust. Now she has a pile of ashes on the living room floor, and a life to reclaim. Her friend and next-door neighbor joins her to assess the situation.

Shadow Boxer and Poof! are funded by the City of Austin and presented in coordination with the Vortex Theatre. Note: The plays are for mature audiences.
